The LLILAS Benson Digital Scholarship Office of the LLILAS Benson Latin American Studies and Collections has unveiled two new digital resources that expand access to significant holdings for teaching and research.
The Benson Latin American Collection preserves the official photographs taken during Mexico’s 1910 independence centennial celebrations, also known as the Centenario. A new digital portal now provides online access to more than 1,000 of these historic images through an interactive map and supporting resources for educators and researchers.
Brazil is among the top incarcerators of women worldwide, with Black women accounting for 65 percent of this population. The largest women’s prison in the country is the Penitenciaria Feminina Santana (Santana Women’s Penitentiary) in São Paulo. Every weekend, families of incarcerated women arrive to visit their loved ones on the inside.
AUSTIN, Texas — The University of Texas at Austin announces the appointment of Robert H. McDonald as Senior Vice Provost and Director of the University of Texas Libraries, effective August 16, 2025. McDonald currently serves as Dean of University Libraries and Senior Vice Provost of Online and Extended Education at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he has led transformative initiatives in digital scholarship, online learning and library services.

The University of Texas Libraries is pleased to share that the University of Texas System has signed a new open access (OA) agreement with Wiley, one of the world’s largest academic publishers.
Effective April 28, 2025, the agreement will cover the full cost of article processing charges (APCs) for UT-affiliated corresponding authors publishing in Wiley’s hybrid open access journals – those that offer authors the option to publish OA in otherwise subscription-based publications.
