Suno can generate songs in seconds. DALL-E can replicate famous paintings with a simple prompt. The conversation around these Generative AI tools often centers on job losses and deep fakes. But this session asks a different question: "What happens to creative work when part of the creative process is automated?"
Drawing on media theory and interpretive analysis, we offer a framework for understanding Generative AI as “automated remix”—technologies that can simulate human creativity, flatten creative output, and reshape the conditions under which creative work is done. Based on research conducted through UT Austin’s Good Systems Ethical AI initiative, this in-person session invites attendees to reconsider what generative AI means for creative labor and the future of creative work.
