Students and faculty from the University of Texas at Austin are hosting 9-day residency for artists from the Center for Theater of the Oppressed (CTO) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, whose work advances the “Theater of the Oppressed” method, and opens up pathways for social change.

While in Austin, they will facilitate workshops, perform original theater pieces, and sit on a panel on Art and Activism in Brazil.

The Fine Arts Library hosts a book launch for the new methodology Teatre de las Oprimidas, systematized by Bárbara Santos.

Currently, the CTO is led by an Executive Board of Black Brazilian theater practitioners and activists. As leaders of community groups (Madalenas-Anastácia, Cor do Brasil, and CTO-Cia, among others), they explore questions of racism, sexism, and gender identity through libertarian Black aesthetics.
