Q - What is Pick It Up - Available Items?
The UT Libraries Pick It Up service allows patrons to request available, eligible materials to be retrieved from the shelf and delivered to the UT Libraries checkout desk of their choice for checkout.
Q - Who may request the service?
All borrowers with current checkout privileges are eligible to use the service.
Q - Which items are eligible?
Libraries materials from participating libraries that check out for 14 or more days are eligible for request.
Audio Visual materials from the Fine Arts Library, which check out for 7 days, are also eligible.
Q - Which items are not eligible?
Items that check out for fewer than 14 days are not eligible, with the exception of Audio Visual materials, which check out for 7 days.
Maps, items that are on reserve, items that are designated Library Use Only, and items which have a status other than Available (such as Lost Billed or At Bindery) are also not eligible for request.
At their discretion, libraries may decide to limit requested items to Library Use Only or require that they be picked up at the owning location. If this happens, the owning library will contact you by email with an alert to any changes made to your request.
Q - How do I request an item?
From the item’s entry in the library catalog, click the Pick It Up button, log in with your UT EID and password, select the desired copy (if applicable), and choose the location where you wish to pick up the item. After an item is requested, its status will change from Available to 1 HOLD. Requests are not accepted by telephone, email, or on a walkup basis – online requests only!
Items that are not eligible will not have Pick It Up buttons. If you have questions about a particular item, please contact the owning library shown in the catalog entry.
Q - How soon will I get my item?
This is not a rush service. The estimated turnaround time for an Available item from a UT Austin campus library is 3-5 days. (Retrieval from the Marine Science Library will take longer.) We recommend that patrons who have an immediate need for an item visit the owning library, retrieve it from the shelf, and check it out there.
It is possible that another patron may find a requested book on the shelf before Library staff are able to retrieve it. In that case, the patron who found the item will be given preference, but will receive a shorter loan and will not be able to renew the item. The patron who placed the request online will be put in the queue for the item.
The 3-5 day Pick It Up turnaround does not apply to items that are checked out to other patrons or have a status other than Available (such as In Process or At Bindery).
Q - How will I know when my item is available for checkout?
If your address is on file with the Libraries, you will be notified via email when the item is ready to be picked up. Your list of Requests in My Library Account will show "Ready. Must pick up by <date>
Please do NOT go to the library to check out the item without either receiving the pickup notice or seeing that the item appears in your list of requests as "Ready.” You may be in the request queue for an item, but if you are not first in the queue, you will not be able to check it out.
Q - How long will my item be on hold the hold shelf?
Requested items will remain on the hold shelf for 7 days. After that period, they will either be returned to the owning library or held for the next person in the queue.
