October 13, 2005

Attending: Desmond Lawler, Kenneth Ralls, George Sylvie; Linda Brown, Noah Mass, Kim Skrobarcek; Peggy Mueller, Meghan Sitar; Fred Heath, Dennis Dillon, Jo Anne Hawkins, Mark McFarland, Sue Phillips; Jocelyn Duffy

Agenda items for the next meeting include a discussion of the Texas Digital Library project to be led by Mark McFarland, and a report on the current status of the Library Storage Facility by Fred Heath.

Handouts distributed included the minutes of the meeting for September 7, and sign-up sheets for the "Behind the Scenes" tours of the Perry-Castañeda Library.

Professor Ken Ralls convened the meeting. Professor George Sylvie was elected vice chair. As Professor Ralls will be having hip-joint replacement surgery, Professor Sylvie will work with the UT Libraries staff to select a meeting date for November.

Dr. Fred Heath gave a presentation on the FY2006-2007 budget for the UT Libraries. He discussed the new requests for funding that will be submitted to the Campus Tuition Policy Advising Committee on October 14 and the possible effect on tuition.

Following a discussion of needs and priorities, Professor Lawler moved for the Libraries Committee to support the budget submission as outlined. His motion was seconded, and was passed unanimously by all those in attendance.

The associate director for Digital Initiatives, Mark McFarland, gave an overview of the priorities, needs, and timeline for the Libraries to identify, purchase and install integrated library system (ILS) software to further facilitate many library operations, including ordering, cataloging, circulation, billing, and provision of an online public access catalog.

Mark noted that the Libraries data will remain portable and not be tied to the system of a particular vendor.

Some possible topics for future agendas were discussed, including a presentation by the Libraries Development team, the Google Digitization Project, the Collections Deposit Library, future visits to the Humanities Research Center and the LBJ Library, and the possibility of a single Science/Technology Library.

The Libraries Development team is working with the science and technology libraries and their communities to come up with a proposal for such a new facility.

Services to the Pickle Research Campus, and particularly the new geosciences building there, were brought up for possible further discussion.
