Celebrating the Life

Library Excellence Awards are given to professional librarians and classified staff in the University of Texas Libraries who have made extraordinary contributions.

Greg Aker: Here are some examples from the nominations received for Greg: "Greg provides a calming, confidence-instilling influence when planning and executing the growing number of events sponsored by the UT Libraries."

"Greg reaches out to stakeholders well in advance of their event to help them understand what they need to know and to answer questions so that details are confirmed and events can run smoothly."

"Greg comes early, sets everything up...stays for the event to make sure that everything is working correctly, and then takes everything down..."

"He could easily just throw together a one-size-fits-all A/V package, but instead he custom tailors each event's package to make it the best it can be..."

A typical work day for Greg is easy to describe. Comes early, stays late; Makes it the best it can be.

Michal Glaser: The nominations came from across the Libraries, and all mentioned the same qualities, his graciousness; his thorough knowledge of Acquisitions and Tech Services workflows; his efficiency; and his problem-solving capabilities. Here are some examples:

"Despite staffing downsizing through the last decade in Acquisitions, (he) has kept the orders moving."

"He, more times than I can remember, worked to get films ordered in an unbelievably quick time frame...His speedy, hard work for these cases help me look good to our clients but give him little reward."

"Many of my orders are unusual and get redirected and he is always happy to help me get what I need.  He seems to enjoy these challenges instead of being annoyed by them."

"...he connects bibliographers with Acquisitions staff so that we understand how our work affects each other and so that we can build more effective processes. He sees the big picture and supports clear communication with grace, kindness, and professionalism."

"I cannot imagine being able to do my job without him."

Kristen Hogan: Kristen has made a significant impact on the UT Libraries in a relatively short period of time. She has been in her current role of English Literature & Women's and Gender Studies Librarian for upwards of just 18 months and, in that time, she has found so many ways to contribute to this organization. She has been an advocate and an engaging representative for the Libraries, not only the UT campus, but also locally and nationally. She continually furthers the Libraries' reach and efforts through liaising duties in her respective academic departments, engages the University and local community, and proactively seeks new opportunities around collections, events, and outreach that have already come to fruition. She has serves in both chair and membership capacities in a number of ALA committees.

Among Kristen's many accomplishments, she has worked tirelessly to raise the profile of the Libraries' poetry collection through collaborations with the English Department, Michener Center, the New Writer's Project, and with local poets. She organized the transfer the Ruth Stephan Poetry Collection into the UFCU Student Commons and created a dedicated space, the UT Poetry Center, to showcase poets and their work. She has coordinated very successful events including the lifetime achievement award celebration for Dr. Rolando Hinojosa-Smith and the National Poetry Month celebration. She has even appeared on the Longhorn Network showcasing the UT Libraries and its resources. Within the Libraries, she serves on the Library Staff Council, co-chairs a Staff Interest Group on Diversity, and has helped re-energize the PCL Learning Commons through collaborative programming.  Kristen's efforts regularly demonstrate the impact of the Libraries within the University and beyond.

Kristen is routinely noted for her infectious passion, energetic optimism, ability to foster teamwork and to lead by example, and her general graciousness and appreciation for the work of others. As 2013 Texas Poet Laureate Rosemary Catacalos remarked, "I just want to reiterate what a treasure you have in Kristen."
