Biographical Sketch

James W. Zintgraff Jr. was born in 1926 in San Antonio, Texas. Jim Zintgraff joined his father's business, Zintgraff Photographers and worked as a photographer for 56 years. His commercial subjects included San Antonio landmarks like the Alamo and HemisFair, street scenes, businesses, movie theaters, film stars, and local events.

In 1991, Zintgraff co-founded the Rock Art Foundation based in San Antonio, Texas. The heart of the foundation is the White Shaman Perserve located 40 miles northwest of Del Rio. The preserve soars above a chasm carved out by the flow of the Pecos River and is one of several rock art sites photographed by Zintgraff. The foundation put together the Rock Art Rendezvous which included travels to, and tours of, several of the thousands of rock art panels in the Lower Pecos region.

Zintgraff first saw the rock art pictographs when on a hunting trip to the Lower Pecos region. Thereafter, he traded his rifle for a camera and began documenting these amazing archeological sites. Zintgraff visited Panther Cave at Seminole Canyon Historical Park before the creation of Lake Amistad. The site was not easily accessible and Zintgraff had to rappel down from above to enter the ridge where the paintings covered the limestone walls. Zintgraff's personal appreciation of rock art paintings compelled others to ensure the sites were protected and preserved.
