Historical Note

The Alamo Business Council was founded in May of 1984. A series of social gatherings was designed to establish an organization for gay and lesbian professionals in San Antonio. The organization was modeled after a similar group in Houston, the Executive and Professional Association of Houston. In the spring of 1984, the Alamo Business Council held its first meeting and program. Russell Adam, ABC's first president, provided the drive and determination to grow the organization.

The early years were tumultuous as is evident in the Standing Rules to the bylaws which include both active and inactive (past) rules. The Alamo Business Council bylaws have gone through numerous changes as the organization has become less "closeted" and has evolved to better meet the needs of the San Antonio community.

A newsletter, the Monthly ABC's was created to provide information to the group's membership. In the fall of 1986, the first membership directory was published. The first Members Only Monthly Social (MOMS) was held in September of 1987. This monthly cocktail/buffet has evolved to become the most popular social event. In July of 2003, the Delectable Afternoon Dining Society (DADS) was established as a monthly luncheon gathering.

The longevity of ABC is attributable not only to the individuals who have served as president, but also to the talented and dedicated members on the Board of Directors. ABC has been fortunate to have a participatory membership that has readily assisted in the numerous, varied activities of the organization. The decision to be a non-political organization and to remain neutral regarding various issues has contributed to the staying power of the group.
