Biographical Note

SNAP is a weekly publication created by Eugene Coleman, G.J. Sutton and Reverend Claude W. Black to give attention to news that mainstream media of San Antonio would not cover. It faced many hurdles in its early years, including backlash, boycotts, and even violent threats, due to the fact that the magazine covered news concerning police brutality and segregation in San Antonio businesses and public facilities. With the support of the community and a dedication to reporting news from an African-American perspective, SNAP overcame such difficulties and continues to print weekly local publications with a focus on San Antonio politics, and social and current events.

Scope and Content Note

The SNAP News Collection was brought together by Eugene Coleman, co-founder of SNAP. The collection includes an incomplete run of SNAP, consisting of two publications from 1955, five issues from 2009 with multiple copies, and one issue from March 2010. Oversize material consists of one large photograph frame of cover pages from five SNAP publications.
