Biographical Note

Isaac Newton Brown (1817-1889) was born in western Kentucky on May 27, 1817. He married Mayflower descendant, Eliza Ann Read Denison in 1846. The couple lived on the Mississippi Delta in the village of Como in Coahoma County. They had three children, only one of which lived, Henry Denison Brown. Isaac Newton Brown remarried after his first wife passed away. His second wife was Jeanie Valliant Autry Brown. In 1883, Isaac and Jeanie moved to Corsicana, Texas.

Jeanie Valliant Autry Brown (1835-1912) was the second wife of Isaac Newton Brown, father of Henry Denison Brown.

Henry Denison Brown (1853-1914) was born in Como, Mississippi in 1853 to Isaac Newton Brown and Eliza Ann Denison Brown. In 1883, Henry moved with his family to Corsicana, Texas. There he met his future bride Jeanie Valliant Brahan. The couple opened a dry goods store in Corsicana but moved to San Antonio, Texas after fire destroyed their store. Henry Denison Brown found employment in San Antonio as the head teller of Breckenridge Bank.

Jeanie Valliant Brahan Brown (1855-1912) was the wife of Henry Denison Brown. Jeanie was the niece of Henry's step mother, Jeanie Valliant Autry Brown.

Martha Brown Storm (1890-1923) born in San Antonio in 1890, was the daughter of Henry Brown and Jeanie Valliant Brahan Brown. After marrying, Martha moved with her husband to Wichita Falls where he owned a natural gas distribution company. Martha Storm died from injuries inflicted during a train accident in 1923. Martha is buried in San Antonio's City Cemetery Number Two with her father, mother, and sister.

Elise Denison Brown Lane (1884-1968) was born in 1884 in San Antonio to Henry Denison Brown and Jeanie Valliant Brown. Referred to by family members as Beppy, Elise attended the University of Texas in Austin where she received a Master of Arts in Spanish. Elise had the distinction of being the first member of the UT Austin (Iota) chapter of Chi Omega sorority, an organization she remained active in for many decades. After gaining her degree, Elise traveled to Mexico where she served as an interpreter for several years before returning to San Antonio. In addition to her many accomplishments, Elsie was one of the first female home builders in San Antonio. Elise married Barton George Lane, Sr..

Barton George Lane, Sr (1874-1956) was a descendant of Thomas Lane of Jamestown, Virginia, one of the earliest members of the colony. Barton was an insurance agent, a real estate broker, a 33rd degree Mason, and a Shriner. Barton George Lane, Sr. and Elise Denison Brown Lane had four children.

Elise Lila Lane Grohe (1911-2005) was born to Barton George Lane, Sr. and Elise Brown Lane in San Antonio on June 16, 1911. Elise graduated from Incarnate Word College and like her mother, was a member of Chi Omega sorority. Elise received a Master of Arts with honors in Counseling from St. Mary's University. She worked as a teacher at Lanier High School, a bookkeeper for a tire company, and as a social worker for the State of Texas. Elise married Frederick William Grohe, Jr. and moved with him to Houston where he had a veterinary practice. After divorcing Fred, Elise returned to San Antonio. Elise died in 2005 and is buried in San Antonio City Cemetery Number Two.

Henry Lane was born to Elise Brown Lane and Barton George Lane, Sr. in San Antonio, Texas. Henry lived in Washington, D.C. before settling permanently in the San Francisco Bay Area where he attended school and became a certified public accountant. Henry married Sally Brown who was from one of the San Francisco's founding families. They lived in Marin County, California and had four children, Barton Lane, Clinton Lane, Denison Lane, and Sally Lane.

Dorothy Florence Lane Brennan (1915-1992), born in San Antonio, Texas, was the daughter of Elise Brown Lane and Barton George Lane, Sr. She attended the University of Texas at Austin as an undergraduate. Dorothy was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She married Hugh Brennan and had one child, Henry Vick Lane Brennan. Dorothy died in Midland, Texas in 1992 but was buried in San Antonio City Cemetery Number Two.

Barton George Lane, Jr. (1916-1997), the son of Barton George Lane, Sr. and Elise Brown Lane, was born in 1916 in San Antonio, Texas. He graduated from West Point in 1939 and enjoyed a thirty year career in the military. His appointments included field artillery and intelligence. Barton married Dorcas Scarborough and they had two children, Barton George Lane, III and Charles Scarborough Lane.


Scope and Content Note

The Brown and Lane Family Papers consist of correspondence, the bulk of which comes from four generations of the family. Also included in the collection are Elise Denison Brown Lane Chi Omega sorority materials, financial records, genealogical records, and assorted materials. The collection is arranged into six series: Correspondence, Elise Denison Brown Lane Chi Omega Sorority Materials, Financial Records, Genealogical Notebooks, Charts, and Certificates, Diplomas, and Assorted Materials.

The Correspondence series contains letters from five generations of family members. Correspondence primarily consists of exchanges between family members recalling daily activities, travels, work, relationships, and illness. The closeness of family members is evident in the frequency and tone of the correspondence. Letters were often written daily or weekly when family members were apart and served to keep husbands and wives, parents and children, and siblings emotionally connected when separated geographically.

The Elise Denison Brown Lane Chi Omega Sorority Materials series contains members lists, lists of initiates, member portraits and photographs, Debutante Days notebook of clippings, Iota chapter correspondence and history.

The Financial Records series contains house repair receipts, bank records, and ledgers.

The Genealogy Notebooks, Charts, and Certificates series contains family genealogical information compiled by Elise Brown Lane, Elise Lila Lane Grohe, and others .

The Diplomas series contains diplomas from several family members.

The Assorted Materials series contains Free Mason certificates, pet records, print materials, and ephemera.
