Henderson is a former Professor of history who served as the Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, which later became part of the College of Liberal and Fine Arts, from 1980 to 2006 at the University of Texas at San Antonio. He is a Fulbright Scholar and a member of the Texas Association of Deans of Liberal Arts and Sciences’ Board of Directors.

Biographical Note

Dr. Dwight F. Henderson was born in Austin, TX in 1937. He graduated from McCallum High School in Austin, TX, and earned his Bachelor of Arts, with honors, from the University of Texas at Austin in 1959. He received his Master of Arts in History in 1961, and completed his Ph.D. in History in 1966 at the University of Texas at Austin. His publications include "Courts for a New Nation" and "Congress, Courts, and Criminals: The Development of Federal Criminal Law, 1801-1829," as well as several journal articles and book reviews.

Henderson began teaching history at Indiana University in Fort Wayne in 1966, serving as the Dean of Arts and Letters from 1976-1980 and as the Acting Chancellor at Indiana University-Purdue University in Fort Wayne from 1978-1979. He became Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) in 1980 and served as the acting Vice President for Academic Affairs at UTSA from 1986-1988. He was elected to the Board of Directors for the Texas Association of Deans of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 1992.

Henderson served on numerous committees and boards while at UTSA. In 1993 he was granted a Fulbright award to study academic administration in Germany. Henderson is a founding member of UTSA’s Retired Faculty Association. He is responsible for providing scholarship opportunities to both undergraduate and graduate history students through the College of Liberal and Fine Arts Dwight F. Henderson Endowed Scholarship in History. He retired as Dean in 2006 and continued to teach courses at UTSA until 2013.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of materials from Dr. Henderson’s academic career, including research materials, publications, course evaluations, correspondence, photographs and newspaper clippings documenting Henderson's involvement in academia and his activities at UTSA. Research materials include copies of manuscripts, book reviews, articles and books. The collection spans the years 1960-2012 and is arranged into three series: 1) Activities; 2) Course Evaluations and IDEA Reports; and 3) Publications.

Detailed Description of the Collection

I.) Activities

This series consists of both professional and personal activities from the years 1966 to 2004. The series includes newspaper clippings, photographs, personal correspondence, letters of appreciation, conference and seminar information and brochures, conference speech notes, course materials, annual reports, faculty evaluations, book reviews, personal cards and letters, letters from students, curriculum vitae, certificates of accomplishment, letters of reference written for Henderson, materials related to his Fulbright activities, materials related to his activities at UTSA and within the community, and research and correspondence for publications.
The series is arranged chronologically and by subject.
