Descriptive Summary

Creator: Mitchell Lake Wetlands Society (San Antonio, Tex.)
Title: Mitchell Lake Wetlands Society records,
Dates: 1930-2014
Creator Abstract: As the site of one of San Antonio's first centralized wastewater treatment projects, Mitchell Lake spent most of the 20th century as a sewage collection site. The lake is positioned on a natural migratory bird route and serves as a resting point for tens of thousands of birds each year, who continued to frequent the shallow wetlands despite the sewage. By the time discharge of raw or partially treated effluent was discontinued in 1987, Mitchell Lake was recognized as a world-class bird-watching site. Bird watchers come from all over the world to see the unique variety of birds that visit there. Mitchell Lake Wetlands Society was a support group that assisted San Antonio Water System in protecting and developing Mitchell Lake as a bird and wildlife sanctuary.

Historical Note

As the site of one of San Antonio's first centralized wastewater treatment projects, Mitchell Lake spent most of the 20th century as a sewage collection site.

In 1994 the Junior League Wetlands group developed a constitution and bylaws and organized the Mitchell Lake Wetlands Society (MLWS), incorporating it as a nonprofit organization. It had five Standing Committees: Education, History, Science, Membership, and Planning. Its 63 initial members were drawn from the Junior League of San Antonio, the League of Women Voters of the San Antonio Area, the Bexar Audubon Society, and the San Antonio Audubon Society.

Just south of downtown San Antonio, the Mitchell Lake Audubon Center is located on a 1200-acre natural area. The bird refuge consists of the 600-acre Mitchell Lake, 215 acres of wetlands and ponds and 385 acres of upland habitat. The Leeper House, a restored 1910 home is now the Mitchell Lake Audubon Center. National Audubon Society has partnered with the San Antonio Water System (SAWS) to showcase this natural area and welcomes nature enthusiasts as well as schoolchildren and families. The Mitchell Lake Audubon Center provides science education for local K-12 schools with a special emphasis on 4th grade.
