Biographical Note

John Shown was born and raised in San Antonio. After many years living elsewhere, Shown returned to San Antonio in the 1970s to continue his work as an artist. He was known for his collages and stitchery wall hangings many of which are owned by collectors across America. Shown created Forum magazine, an Artists Forum of Texas publication. In addition to working as an artist, Shown worked as a writer, lighting and scenic designer, photographer, and film maker. John Shown passed away in November 2001.

Scope and Content Note

The John Shown Collection primarily documents Shown's work as an artist while living in San Antonio through inventories, photographs, and slides. Three personal journals chronicle Shown's daily life. His entries are augmented with art exhibit cards and brochures, artwork, correspondence, print materials, and ephemera. Also in the collection are issues of Forum magazine as well as photographs and print materials related to the publication. The collection has been arranged into three series: Art, Forum, and Journals.
