      <head>Biographical Note</head>
      <p>George Perry is a neuroscientist and Dean of the College of Sciences and Professor of Biology at the University of Texas at San Antonio and a leading researcher in the field of Alzheimer's disease. Born April 12, 1953 in Lompoc, California, Perry received his bachelor's of arts degree in Zoology from University of California, Santa Barbara in 1974 and his PhD in Marine Biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography of University of California at San Diego in 1979. He then received a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Cell Biology in the laboratories of Dr. Bill Brinkley, Joseph Bryan and Anthony R. Means at Baylor College of Medicine, where his research focused on cytoskeletal abnormalities. In 1995, Perry joined the faculty of Case Western Reserve University, where he eventually became Professor of Pathology in the School of Medicine and where he currently holds an adjunct appointment. Since 2005, he has been the Dean of the College of Sciences and Professor of Biology at the University of Texas at San Antonio. </p>

    <p>Perry's research  focuses on the mechanism of formation and physiological consequences of the cytopathology of Alzheimer disease. His research  explores how oxidative damage plays a role in the initial cytopathological abnormality in Alzheimer disease and  the sequence of events leading to neuronal oxidative damage and the source of the increased oxygen radicals. His research also looks at the metabolic basis for mitochondrial damage restricted to vulnerable neurons, and the consequences of RNA oxidation on protein synthesis rate and fidelity.</p><p>With over 900 publications, Perry is listed as one of the top 100 most-cited scientists in Alzheimer's disease research and one of the top 25 scientists in free radical research. Perry is also the editor for numerous journals and is editor-in-chief for the <emph render="italic">Journal of Alzheimer's Disease</emph>. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences and past-president of the American Association of Neuropathologists.</p></bioghist>

    <p>The George Perry Papers include correspondence, email, grant files, committee files, drafts, laboratory notes, conference files, and slides that document his academic career and research activities primarily  related to the cytopathology of Alzheimer's disease.    The papers are organized into seven series: <emph render="bold">Correspondence</emph>, <emph render="bold">Grants</emph>, <emph render="bold">University Administration</emph>, <emph render="bold">  Article drafts and correspondence</emph>, <emph render="bold"> Professional Associations</emph>, <emph render="bold">  Laboratory Notes</emph>,  and <emph render="bold">Conferences</emph>. </p><p><emph render="bold">Correspondence</emph> series includes 31 ft. of  letters and 38, 839 emails written by or to Perry between 1976-2010 and is organized alphabetically by correspondent last name, journal title, or organization. <emph render="bold">Grants</emph> files include 5 ft. of planning material, proposals, and reports organized alphabetically by title. A majority of the grant files pertain to a 2004-2005 training grant in cellular and molecular aging.  <emph render="bold">University Administration</emph> series consists of 2 ft. of committee minutes, agendas, reports related to committees Dr. Perry served on at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine and the University of Texas at San Antonio and are organized alphabetically by committee. <emph render="bold">  Article drafts and correspondence</emph> series includes 7 ft. of drafts, correspondence, and referee reports of journal articles submitted for publication and is organized chronologically by year.  <emph render="bold"> Professional Associations</emph> and <emph render="bold">Conferences</emph> series include 3 ft. reference files and correspondence related to  various Alzheimer and neuroscience organizations and conferernces.   </p><p>This collection is housed at UTSA's HemisFair Park Campus.</p></scopecontent>
