Historical Note

Established in 1995, the University of Texas at San Antonio's Department of Computer Science offers courses and degree programs that provide students with the knowledge of computer science with degree programs leading towards the B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. Research is conducted in algorithms, bioinformatics, computer and information security, computer architecture, computer networks, databases, high performance computing, parallel and distributed systems, programming languages and compilers, and software engineering.

The first computer science courses were taught at UTSA in the Mathematics Department beginning with the creation of the university in 1973. Between 1973-1983, UTSA offered a M.S. degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, and Systems Design. Bachelor and masters level degree programs in computer science were added in 1984 that provided students with the option of concentrating either in Computer Science or Systems Design. With the addition of the Ph.D. program in 1995, the Department of Computer Science was established as its own department and was initially chaired by Robert E. Hiromoto (Interim, 1995-1997) followed by Richard F. Sincovec (1997-2000), Lawrence R. Williams (Interim, 2000-2001), Kleanthis Psarris (2001-2011), and Daniel Jiménez (2011-).
