Computing at the University of Texas at San Antonio began with the creation of UTSA's Data Processing Department in 1972, which was responsible for the administration of student registration and class enrollment using punch cards and remote computing. UTSA shared computing resources with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio's computing facility until 1975, when UTSA purchased its first mainframe computer for both administrative computing and to serve the research needs of faculty and students. The university continued to use punch cards for student registration until 1980, when the university developed an advance registration process that used networked access to a central mainframe computer located in John Peace Library. UTSA was the first university in Texas to use a touchtone telephone process for student registration beginning in 1986, which the university would use until it switched to a web-based registration system (ASAP) in 1997. UTSA purchased its first student information system, ISIS, for administrative computing in 1983, which it would continue to use until it was replaced with the web-based Banner software in 2002. From 1975-2005, the Office of Information Technology (formerly Computer Center Services) reported to the Vice President of Business Affairs. The Office of Information Technology is currently headed by the Vice Provost for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer who is responsible for all administrative computing at UTSA and reports to the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The records document the history of computing at UTSA and the activities of UTSA's Office of Information Technology beginning in 1974. Included in the collection are policies and procedures created by the Office of Information Technology governing computing at UTSA, computing files related to the planning and implementation of UTSA's student information systems, and strategic computing plans for UTSA.
This collection is housed at UTSA's HemisFair Park Campus, though off-site
access is also available at UTSA's John Peace Library.
