      <abstract label="Creator Abstract:" encodinganalog="545$a">Dr. Peter T. Flawn was the second president of the University of Texas at San Antonio, serving from 1973 to 1977. Flawn oversaw many milestones during his five-year tenure including the first classes held at the Koger Executive Center, receiving the first shipment of 120,000 books for the UTSA Library, presiding over the first commencement ceremony, and being  instrumental in the University's receiving full accreditation for graduate programs by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. He also served as the president of the University of Texas at Austin from 1979 to 1985 and as interim president from 1997 to 1998.</abstract>

  <bioghist encodinganalog="545"> 
    <head>Historical Note</head><p>Dr. Peter Tyrell Flawn was the second president of the University of Texas at San Antonio, serving from 1973 to 1977. </p><p>Flawn was born February 17, 1926. He earned an undergraduate degree from Oberlin College in 1947,  a master of science degree in geology from Yale University in 1948 and a Ph.D. in geology from Yale in 1951. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and he has been active in numerous other professional and scientific associations.</p><p>Flawn joined UTSA after serving 24 years at the University of Texas at Austin, first as a research scientist and geologist in the university's bureau of economic geology, and then as director of the division of Natural Resources and the Environment and university vice president and executive vice president for academic affairs.</p><p>Beginning his five-year tenure at UTSA in 1973, Flawn oversaw many milestones at the new university including the first classes held at the Koger Executive Center, receiving the first shipment of 120,000 books for the UTSA Library, presideing over the first commencement ceremony, and being  instrumental in the University receiving full accreditation for graduate programs by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.</p><p>Following his tenure at UTSA, Flawn served as acting director of the University of Texas at Austin Marine Science Institute and acting chairman of the Department of Marine Studies. His presidency of the University of Texas at Austin began in September 1979.  He served as president from 1979 to 1985, then as interim president from 1997 to 1998. In 2000, Flawn received the Santa Rita Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Board of Regents of the University of Texas System.</p>
