Historical Note

Matthew J. Wayner was a professor of neurobiology at the University of Texas at San Antonio. He became a faculty member with UTSA in 1983 and taught in the Biology Department until 2008.

Wayner received an A.B. from Dartmouth College in 1949, an M.S. from Tufts College in 1950, and a PhD from the University of Illinois in 1953. Before coming to the University of Texas at San Antonio, Wayner taught at Syracuse University from 1953-1982. During his tenure at Syracuse, he was a visiting professor at Florida State University (1963), Kanazawa University (Japan, 1967), Arizona State University (1969), La Trobe University (Australia, 1974-1975), and the National Defense Medical Center (Republic of China, 1977).

Wayner served on the editorial boards of several biology journals, serving as editor-in-chief of many of them.


Scope and Content Note

The collection contains general correspondence, correspondence documenting Wayner's position as editor-in-chief of academic journals, dissertations of students Wayner supervised, materials related to biomedical research support grants, research files, articles, conference files, materials pertaining to the establishment of a doctoral program in biology, appointment books, teaching notes, publications, and other materials.

This collection is housed at UTSA's HemisFair Park Campus, though off-site access is also available at UTSA's John Peace Library.
