Historical Note

Sigma Xi was founded in 1886 to honor excellence in scientific investigation and encourage a sense of companionship and cooperation among researchers in all fields of science and engineering. Today, Sigma Xi is an international, multidisciplinary research society whose programs and activities promote the health of the scientific enterprise and honor scientific achievement. Sigma Xi publishes American Scientist magazine, awards hundreds of grants annually to promising student researchers and sponsors a variety of programs that serve science and society. Primary programmatic interests include research ethics, science and engineering education, the public understanding of science, international research networking and the overall health of the research enterprise.

The Charter for the Alamo Chapter was signed on June 6, 1977 as the 208th Chapter of Sigma Xi, The Research Society of North America. Five institutions (Southwest Research Institute, Trinity University, Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research, University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio and University of Texas at San Antonio) were the founding institutions. The intent was to form a chapter which served the entire San Antonio scientific community.

Quarterly meetings are currently sponsored by Trinity University for the general membership and is open to anyone with interest in the scientific society. Each meeting features a speaker with a current scientific topic of general interest as well as a short business meeting.

Scope and Content Note

The collection spans the years 1974-2003 with the bulk dates from 1988-1997 and is made up of six series: Administrative Records, Committees, Officers, Publications, Printed Material, and Activities.

The Administrative Records series includes correspondence and notes; meeting material consisting of meeting announcements, agendas and minutes from monthly, annual and other meetings.

The Committees series includes material relating to several different committees such as the Membership committee, Grant-in-Aid committee, and Admissions comittee and the material within these subseries includes membership lists; election and ballots material; membership nomination forms, applications and revisions; and directories.

The Officers series is comprised of newsletters, articles, correspondence and memos to and from officers, various forms, officers lists, and the administrative papers of various people.

The Publications series includes Sigma Xi publications and magazines.

The Printed Material series includes handbooks for both the Alamo Chapter and national chapter of Sigma Xi and related material such as updated information, a Mac disk containing backup material, a reference guide to officers, newsletters, clippings and other booklets.

The Activities series consists of material such as booklets, programs, memos, etc. that is related to forums, banquets, lectures, and other programs sponsured by Sigma Xi.
