Correspondence |
The Correspondence series is composed of two types of correspondence: historical documents--letters from the 19th century, most of which are from members of the Hughes family and are often about the sheep and angora goat ranch and business owned by William G. Hughes. The second type of correspondence is between descendants of William G. Hughes and Garland Perry. Many of these letters discuss the history of the Hughes family and were written as Perry was working on his biography of William G. Hughes. Also in the correspondence series are letters regarding the acquisition of photographic and research materials for Perry's books on World War I. |

Writings |
Garland Perry was the author of numerous books the subject matter of which ranged from World War I to Texas Hill Country history. In his book Forty Years After The ArgonnePerry chronicles the heroism of World War I soldiers and provides photographs of famous places throughout Europe as they appeared during World War I compared with their appearance years after the war. Perry's passion for World War I history was paralleled by exhuberant love of Texas Hill County history. In his bookAn American Saga: William George Hughes, A Pioneer Texas Rancher. Perry tells the story of Texas pioneer William George Hughes who was successful rancher in Boerne. Hughes raised Angora goats and Merino sheep on his Hill County ranch. His life was tragically cut short in 1904 when he was killed when as a passenger on a train which collided with another train. Perry in addition to his narrative about William G. Hughes, published several books featuring photographs of places across Texas and the Hill Country. Also included is a series of articles on Texas Heritage which Perry wrote for a Boerne publication. |

Photographic Materials |
The Photographic Materials series contains photographs of the William G. Hughes family, their ranch, and persons associated with the Hughes family, many of which were taken during the late 1800s. Also included in this series are photographs of descendants of William G. Hughes. Other photographs in the series are from Garland Perry's travels to Europe as well as his acquisition of photos from World War I. There are also photographs of Texas landmarks such as courthouses, small towns, historical markers, and other places throughout the State with a focus on the Texas Hill Country. |
