      <abstract label="Creator Abstract:" encodinganalog="545$a">The Beta Upsilon Chapter of the Phi Sigma Society, a national honorary science fraternity, was established at the University of Texas at San Antonio in October 1974. The chapter was the first registered student organization at the University of Texas at San Antonio and  included 36 faculty members and students. The chapter's first president was Dennis Perrota.</abstract>

The materials in the booklet document the  establishment, development, and activities of the student chapter from 1974 through 1975. Materials include correspondence and memoranda, a written history, an application to the society, a petition for the establishment of the chapter, by-laws, a registration form for student organizations at UTSA, a list of officers, photographs of the initiation and installation ceremony, a press release and news coverage of the establishment of the chapter, and flyers advertising the chapter's events.</abstract>

    <head>Historical Note</head><p>The Beta Upsilon Chapter of the Phi Sigma Society, a national honorary science fraternity, was established at the University of Texas at San Antonio in October 1974. The chapter, sponsored by Dr. Helen Oujesky (Associate Professor in the Division of Allied Health and Life Sciences), included 36 faculty members and students. According to Dr. Oujesky, the organization was formed to encourage research among its members and associates oriented to the biological sciences.</p><p>The chapter was the first registered student organization at the University of Texas at San Antonio. The chapter's first president was Dennis Perrota. Other officers were Celina Garcia, vice president; Pat Fodor, secretary; Tony Gonzalez, treasurer; and Robert Salvagno, editor.</p>

Flawn and the University of Texas at San Antonio</emph> and is signed by the Chapter's officers. The booklet was given to Dr. Peter T. Flawn, President of UTSA, in April 1975. </p><p>This collection is housed at UTSA's HemisFair Park Campus, though <extref actuate="onrequest" show="new" href="http://lib.utsa.edu/Forms/offsite.php">off-site access is also available at UTSA's John Peace Library.</extref></p>
