The Office of University Communications at the University of Texas at San Antonio was formed following the dissolution of the News & Information Office circa 1988. The News & Information Office, and later the Office of University Communications, was responsible for all official UTSA news reporting and photography. As of October 2008, University Communications is overseen by the Office of the Vice President for University Advancement and comprises three departments: University Publications, Public Affairs, and Web & Multimedia Services.

The collection spans the years 1972 through 2003 and comprises news releases generated by the UTSA Office of University Communications, daily newspaper clippings collected by University Communications documenting news coverage of UTSA, institutional commercials from 1977, and a memorandum regarding a 1983 time capsule. The records are arranged into four series: News Releases, Daily News Clippings, Audiovisual Materials, and Other Materials.
Audiovisual materials in the collection comprise seven commercials, created by local ABC affiliate KSAT TV, advertising the university in 1977. The 30- and 60-second commercials were intended to advertise both the university and individual programs including Environmental Studies, Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, and Applied Science. The commercials were recorded on a single 2-inch quad videotape, which is available for use in the collection in DVD (MJPEG2000) format.
Also included in the collection is a memorandum written by a News & Information Office staff member and dated 1983, regarding the placement of a time capsule in commemoration of UTSA's tenth anniversary. The time capsule was buried by the Student Representative Assembly "for exhumation on the 50th anniversary of UTSA's founding" (presumably referring to the 50th anniversary of classes beginning at the university in 1973, as the university was established in 1969). The memorandum includes the location of and combination for the time capsule.

This series contains news clippings documenting daily news coverage of UTSA by other, usually local, newspapers. Clippings from 1972 to 1986 are original newspaper clippings. Clippings from 1987 to 2002 were photocopied and compiled into a packet entitled "Daily News Service," which was distributed by the Office of University Communications. |

Arranged chronologically. Original order has been maintained. From 1972 to 1986, the original clippings are housed in envelopes, then arranged by subject categories, and filed by month in chronological order. From 1987 to 2002, the clippings are arranged chronologically with no further subject subcategories. |

This series contains seven commercials, created by San Antonio ABC affiliate KSAT TV, advertising the university in 1977. The 30- and 60-second commercials were intended to advertise both the university and individual programs including Environmental Studies, Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, and Applied Science. The dates accompanying each title are assumed to indicate the dates during which the commercial aired, as all commercials were created in 1977. Item suffixes, assigned by the creator of the videotape, indicate the length of each commercial (e.g., "77-1-30" is a 30-second commercial). The commercials were recorded on a single 2-inch quad videotape, which is available for use in the collection in DVD format. |
