The San Antonio Performing Arts Association was a non-profit, tax-exempt organization dedicated to the presentation of outstanding national and international dance, theatre and music. It began as a pilot project initiated in 1976 by the Arts Council of San Antonio, under the name Society for the Performing Arts, to establish a professional presenter organization in the city. It became the San Antonio Performing Arts Association in 1981. The organization presented a diverse schedule of year-round performances as well as a wide range of ticket prices to make events available to the largest possible audiences. In addition to regular seasons of single performances, the SAPAA also presented major festivals like the “New Directions in Music and Dance Festival”, inaugurated in 1989, and the “Early Music Festival”, begun in May 1990. The organization was dissolved in July of 1992.

Performance Seasons
This series contains both administrative and scrapbook materials, which have been kept separated. Both types of materials are not present for each performance. A roster of performances from 1978-1991 can be found in the collection's authority file. |
Initial processing involved photocopying newspaper clippings, but that practice was discontinued. |
Materials are arranged chronologically by season and generally in by order of appearance within each season. |
