Biographical Note

Gilbert C. (Gil) Barrera was a freelance photographer who was employed by the University of Texas at San Antonio to photograph its building and organization from 1972 to 1978. The son of Steve and Rose Barrera, he was born in San Antonio, Texas, on January 22, 1932. He had two brothers: Steve Barrera, Jr., and Roy Barrera, Sr. He was raised in San Antonio, attending Fox Tech High School, where he met his wife Norma. In high school, he created the cartoon series Dizzy Hites and The Friedenhoffenhousens.

His professional work included working as a photojournalist for the San Antonio Light newspaper, then as a freelance photographer for Southwestern Bell, the University of Texas at San Antonio, and Southwest Research. He also contributed work to Life magazine, Southern Living, Saturday Evening Post, La Prensa, and several others.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of photographic negatives and contact sheets created by Gil Barrera from 1972 through 1978 while employed to photograph the physical complex and activities of the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). Among the subjects represented in the collection are construction projects, ceremonies, graduating classes, concerts, distinguished visitors, conference participants, students, professors, and members of the University of Texas administration and Board of Regents.

Almost all images are identified as to person, place, or event on the verso of the contact sheets. Notable subjects include Arleigh B. Templeton, Peter T. Flawn, and James Wagener (UTSA first, second, and third Presidents, respectively), Michael Kelly (first Director of Libraries), Dora Grossenbacher (first Dean of Students), and many early administrators.

Contact Sheets, 1972-1978

Arranged chronologically.
Contact sheet numbers reflect the dates that photographs were taken and their order. For example, Sheet 9-18-72-1 comprises photographs taken on September 18, 1972, part 1. Numbers preceding the titles of photographs indicate frame numbers. Unit titles were transcribed by staff from the versos of the contact sheets, the majority of which are presumed to have been written originally by Gil Barrera or other staff.
