Historical Note

San Antonio Junior Forum, founded in 1961, is one of nine chapters of Junior Forum, Inc. (JFI). The officers of JFI are made up of Junior Forum members from all nine chapters. All Junior Forum branches are private, nonprofit service and welfare organizations and the San Antonio branch has contributed over $1,000,000 to the San Antonio community in its 40 plus years of existence. The objective of Junior Forum, Inc. is to create a greater interest among young women in civic, educational, and philanthropic fields. San Antonio Junior Forum members demonstrate an interest in their communities, volunteer for local service projects, learn about new projects, are knowledgeable of area needs, and help raise funds that are distributed to charities and other organizations in the San Antonio area.

On January 20, 1961, Mrs. Hank L. Hudson, familiar with the work of the Houston Junior Forum, organized the San Antonio branch and became its charter president. Twelve charter members signed up under Mrs. Hudson and began SAJF's tradition of community service by volunteering with the Inman Christian Center and Wesley House. Other early volunteer efforts included establishing, organizing, and running the San Antonio Junior Forum Literacy Library and assisting at hospitals and children's shelters. Later efforts included establishing a senior citizens program at Commander's House with the San Antonio Department of Parks and Recreation. The Commander's House, their most notable community service project, provided seniors with inexpensive meals, programs, and activities, and was located in a renovated, historical city property. Other outreach and volunteer programs included Mobile Meals, making quilts for underprivileged children, and performing Kids on the Block shows, which provided positive role models by featuring puppets that are multi-ethnic and disabled. Current activities include volunteering to assist at the Fiesta Arts Fair (held each year during Fiesta at the Southwest School of Arts and Crafts), organizing Bunko games for senior citizens, and sponsoring the Susan G. Komen Celebration of Life Breakfast, which provides funds to women fighting breast cancer.

In addition to their volunteer work, the San Antonio Junior Forum has raised money for the community through organized events and fundraisers. Early fundraisers included yard sales, mens-only luncheons, and a wine and cheese party. Las Vegas Night, a common fundraiser throughout the early 1970s, eventually gave way to galas with different themes, occurring at irregular intervals. By the 1980s, the organization had decided on two major fundraisers, one in the spring and one in the fall, with minor ones scattered throughout the year. The spring fundraiser was a themed Gala. The themes changed each year and included elaborate decorations, catered meals, raffles, silent auctions, and live music. The fall fundraiser was a Style Show, which would take place after a brunch or lunch, and usually included the collection of a prominent designer, such as Victor Costa, St. John and Liz Claiborne. Since 2003, the SAJF has held a Book and Author Luncheon each spring to raise funds.

Through the 1990's, membership meetings were held at Celebration Square, a building owned by the SAJF. The building was also rented out to other groups in the San Antonio area for their meetings and events. The building was sold in 2001.

There are five classes of membership in the San Antonio Junior Forum. Active members are between the ages of 25 and 39 and fulfill all service and meeting attendance requirements. Prospective members, also in the same age range, are essentially new members who must successfully pass an initiation year of service and meet all requirements. Active membership is terminated at the age of 45 and members will be offered membership in the Junior Forum Sustainers Club if they have five or more years of active service. Inactive members are members that take time off during their tenure, and Honorary Life Members are those who have done outstanding service for the organization and are honored by the group.

The San Antonio Junior Forum has been honored as one of the city's top volunteer organizations. They realize the importance of continually studying the needs of the San Antonio community and looking for better opportunities to serve. Among their current local service projects are organizations that provide assistance and care to women and children, organizations for the study and prevention of cancer and other diseases, and organizations that provide assistance and care to senior citizens.

Funds raised through events and cookbook sales (Celebrate San Antonio and Clean Your Plate: Dishes for Every Occasion) allow the San Antonio Junior Forum to purchase equipment, supplies, and other items for local charities and welfare organizations. They also allow SAJF to provide scholarships to area San Antonio high school students who plan to continue their education at a college or university.

Detailed Description of the Collection

1. Administrative, 1951-1998

This series contains information about the San Antonio Junior Forum (SAJF) operations and officers, Celebration Square, the San Antonio Chapter's involvement in its parent chapter Junior Forum, Inc., as well as awards, insurance, and legal matters. Also included is information about the history of the SAJF from 1961-1990. The bulk of material in the Administrative Documents subseries is dated after 1975.
Junior Forum operates with a Board of Directors, President, President Elect, Treasurer, Recording Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, and Parliamentarian. The organizational documents include articles of incorporation, bylaws, and standing rules in addition to documents related to their nonprofit status and their ability to solicit funds as a nonprofit organization. Board documents include agendas and minutes for Board meetings (1963-1995), General meetings (1961-1995), correspondence, lists of duties, procedures, and reports.
Also included in the Administrative series is The Junior Forum newsletter, Focus on Forum (1966-1995). It is a monthly publication and provides members with reminders of meetings and deadlines, members scheduled service hours, budget information and goings-on within the group. Focus on Forum was called the San Antonio Junior Forum Newsletter through 1982.
This series also provides evidence of more than thirty SAJF committees. Correspondence, questionnaires, meeting information, lists of committee members, news clippings and reports (1962-1995) provide details of the work of these committees, although some committees have more complete information than others.
