A Guide to the National Council of Jewish Women, San Antonio Section, Records, 1907-1997
Historical NoteThe San Antonio Section of the National Council of Jewish Women is dedicated in the spirit of Judaism to furthering human welfare in the Jewish and general communities on a local, national and international level. The San Antonio Section was established in May 1907 in the parlor of the Menger Hotel by a small group of women. Over the years, the organization has made many groundbreaking strides in assisting handicapped and disadvantaged citizens and in promoting education for adolescents and adults. In 1909 the San Antonio Section of the NCJW founded a night school to teach English to foreign born citizens of San Antonio, which inspired the establishment of such courses by San Antonio's Board of Education. Contributions from the city toward the development of prenatal care and aid for the blind were also inspired by early efforts of the San Antonio Section of the NCJW. In later years, the organization sponsored the annual Decorators' Showcase, a fundraising event which financed many ongoing charity programs.
