Biographical Note

Robert F. Heizer was born in Colorado on July 13, 1915. He attended Sacramento Junior College from 1932-1934, and went on to receive his A.B. degree (1936) and his Ph.D. in Anthropology (1941), both from the University of California at Berkeley. His academic career began with a one-year appointment at the University of Oregon (1940-1941) but was followed by a job as a marine pipe fitter in California during World War II. Heizer then spent one year teaching at the University of California at Los Angeles (1945-1946) before becoming an assistant professor at the University of California at Berkeley in 1946. In 1948 he was promoted to associate professor and in 1952 attained the rank of professor. He remained with the Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley, until his retirement in 1976.

A member of a number of archaeological and anthropological societies, Heizer also organized and directed the University of California Archaeological Survey from 1948 until it dissolved in to 1960. He was also coordinator of its successor, the Archaeological Research Facility, from 1960 until his retirement in 1976.

In addition to teaching and administering, Heizer wrote and published extensively, mostly between 1937 and 1949. He did fieldwork in California, Nevada, Mesoamerica, South America and Egypt. Heizer performed landmark studies in Olmec Archaeology, particularly at the site of La Venta, beginning in 1953. He received numerous honors and awards throughout his lifetime. Dr. Robert F. Heizer died July 18, 1979.

Scope and Content Note

The Robert F. Heizer Papers span the years 1957 through 1991 and consist of correspondence, writings, and subject files, the bulk of the materials being Heizer's subject files on rock art and ancient methods of securing, transporting, and positioning extremely heavy stones. The papers also include drafts of the book The Age of Giants: Ancient Heavy Transport in Antiquity (1990), a posthumous publication, edited by Thomas Hester from Heizer's writings, notes and supporting research.

The collection is arranged into three series: Correspondence, Writings, and Subject Files. The Correspondence series (1957-1991) is composed of a few letters, papers from students, a grant application, and receipts for trips. There is very little information about Heizer's personal life. There is also a file on Thomas Hester, Heizer's student, friend, and later the editor of The Age of Giants.

The Writings include a bibliography of Heizer's published works, four undated drafts of articles, and the drafts of Age of Giants. The earliest draft of the book is a typed copy of Heizer's original chapters, which were later expanded and completed by Hester. Also included in this series are field research documentation and notes, drafts, research articles, illustrations and photographs.

The third series, Subject Files, consists of materials collected by Heizer over the course of his career. Documents include journals--both foreign and domestic, journal articles, newspaper clippings, illustrations, conference and museum programs, brochures, flyers, and newsletters. Topics include archaeology, civilization, economics, labor, petrography, petrology, politics, agriculture, engineering, and transportation. Heizer was also interested in the topic of supernatural phenomenon in ancient transport, a frequent topic of the popular archaeology literature of the 1970s. The subject files are rich on the topics of rock art, ancient transport, and Olmec culture.

The arrangement of the subject files follows the chapters in The Age of Giants: the study of ancient methods of heavy transport, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Europe, Mesoamerica, Central and South America, Oceania, and Asia. North America has been added to the previous list of geographic locations (in the correct alphabetical order) because Heizer collected many articles about archaeology in North America. Under the geographic breakdown are assorted articles and clippings pertaining to Heizer's broad interests.

The Heizer Rock Art Collection was donated in part to the UTSA Library circa 1974. The books were integrated into the library's collections. The offprints have been included in the Robert F. Heizer Papers, 1957-1991. The majority of Heizer's monographs were later donated to UCLA as a foundation for the UCLA Rock Art Archives.

The Heizer Olmec Literature Collection was acquired by UTSA in 1978. Heizer conducted landmark studies in Olmec Archaeology, particularly at the site of La Venta, beginning in 1955. His original site notes, slides, and photographs were donated to the National Anthropological Archives, Smithsonian Institution.

Monographs from the 2002 donation were added to the John Peace Library collection. A list of these books is available at the Archives.
