Biographical Note

Edward H. Garnett was from Warrensburg, Missouri. He joined the Army
Air Corps in October, 1942 and was sent to San Antonio, Texas for training. He
was classified as a pilot, rather than a navigator or bombardier and went to
preflight training. In February 1943, he was transferred to Victory Field
outside Vernon, Texas to continue his training.

Ms. Arlea Newman was a friend of Mr. Garnett's from Independence,
Missouri. Shortly after he arrived in Texas, Mr. Garnett asked Ms. Newman to
come to Texas and marry him. Garnett wrote letters to her almost daily until
she left Missouri for Texas in March 1943.

Garnett's parents saw Ms. Newman on a regular basis at their home in
Warrensburg. His parents also kept him informed about his young son, Daniel,
from a previous relationship. The boy lived with his mother near Garnett's
        parents.

The collection comprises correspondence between Edward H. Garnett and friend Arlea Newman. The correspondence dates from October 1942 to
March 1943, while Mr. Garnett was in the Army Air Corps. Garnett was stationed
at the San Antonio Aviation Cadet Center near Kelly Field (later Kelly Air
Force Base) and Victory Field in Vernon, Texas.

The letters discuss the couple's plans to marry and Garnett's desire
to have her move to Texas to be with him. Garnett also describes his daily
routine as a cadet. His son, Daniel, from an earlier relationship is also
mentioned. Garnett frequently wrote two letters to Ms. Newman; one to share
with their families and a second for her alone to read. Garnett sometimes also
enclosed letters from other people that he wanted Ms. Newman to read.
