Historical Note

The Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) of San Antonio was created in the spring of 1886 with approximately 100 members. W. J. B. Patterson was made President and C.T. Williams served as General Secretary. The YMCA of San Antonio was dedicated putting Judeo-Christian principles into practice while building healthy minds and bodies. Activities included various exercise programs, educational programs and sports leagues, most of which were geared to serve the needs of boys and young men. In addition to its programs, for many years the YMCA offered residential space for men under 36 years of age at its central downtown branch. The construction of the first YMCA building in San Antonio was completed in 1907 at the intersection of North Alamo and Third. Twenty years later the YMCA of San Antonio purchased the site of Camp Flaming Arrow in Hunt, Texas.

In an effort to serve different ethnic and geographic groups within the city, the YMCA of San Antonio created several branches in different parts of the city. In 1918, the association started programs designed to serve the African American Community in San Antonio. In response to a petition by the African-American Community, The Negro Branch of the YMCA was created in 1945. The branch was renamed the Alamo City Branch in 1946. As of 1994, this branch, which serves the east side of San Antonio, has been known as the Davis-Scott Branch. By 1976, three other branches were established: Westside, Northwest and Northeast. Specific programs and membership rates varied slightly from one branch to another.

The name of the Association was changed to the YMCA of San Antonio and the Hill Country in the early 1990s but records from that period are not in the collection. In 1997, the YMCA of San Antonio and the Hill Country operated seven branches; two camps: Camp Flaming Arrow and Camp Davis Scott; two Youth Development Campuses; and a network of childcare centers. The YMCA also helps to run an after school program called Operation Prime Time with sites all over the San Antonio area.

Scope and Content Note

The Records of the YMCA of San Antonio and the Hill Country date from 1886 to 1977. The bulk of the records are Administrative records. These include the minutes of the Board of Directors, the governing body of the YMCA and other committees. These minutes illustrate many of the issues involved with the day to day operation of the Association such as membership, fundraising and maintenance. They also show how the YMCA changed as the city grew and how it tried to deal with different needs of the various ethnic groups in the city.

The Branches series contains records relating to the programs and operation of particular branches of the YMCA. Most of the material relates to the Northwest Branch in the first years after its creation in 1951. Since each branch in San Antonio served a different community, the methods and programs used by the branches could vary. Included are materials relating to the Los Angeles Heights Branch. The Topical Files includes material relating to the YMCA of San Antonio as a whole but do not concern the administrative running of the Association. This material includes newspaper clippings and information about athletic programs. These files show the how the YMCA was trying to carry out its mission of building healthier minds and bodies for the young men and boys of San Antonio.

The bulk of the remaining material are photographic prints, clippings and audiovisual materials documenting YMCA of San Antonio programs, events, facilities and participants. Also present are board meeting minutes, planning materials, brochures and newsletters.
