Historical Note

The flood of 2002 began as heavy rainfall on June 30th and lasted for several more days before subsiding, causing waterways to flood. Eighty counties were affected by the flooding with the majority of the damage accumulating in San Antonio and the surrounding areas. The rain damaged over 48,000 homes and nine deaths resulted from the flooding. The UTSA Archives solicited materials for inclusion in this collection to provide researchers with a record of the extent, damage, and effects of the flood.

Scope and Contents

These materials document the flood as experienced by San Antonio and surrounding counties. Additionally, staff at the archives clipped newspaper articles about the flood from the San Antonio Express-News. The majority of the materials were collected in 2002, but clippings continue to be added to the collection when the Flood is mentioned in newspaper articles.
