	Creator Abstract:	Dr. Harold Vagtborg, President of Southwest Foundation for Research and Education, created the Council of Research & Academic Libraries of San Antonio (CORAL Union) in the hope of forming a community of libraries that would share information and research materials to help the scholarly public. CORAL Union was founded on 13 December 1966; and at that time, the consortium included: Incarnate Word College, Our Lady of the Lake University, St. Mary’s University, San Antonio College, San Antonio Library, Southwest Research Institute, Southwest Foundation for Research and Education, Trinity University, and the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio. These charter members carried out the mission of CORAL—to share sources—by creating the first union list of sources.

The collection dates span from 1966 to 2005. There are five series, which are: Administrative Documents, Financial Documents, Grants, Special Interest Groups, and Publications.

Historical Note

Dr. Harold Vagtborg, President of Southwest Foundation for Research and Education, created the Council of Research & Academic Libraries of San Antonio (CORAL Union) in the hope of forming a community of libraries that would share information and research materials to help the scholarly public. CORAL Union was founded on 13 December 1966; and at that time, the consortium included: Incarnate Word College, Our Lady of the Lake University, St. Mary’s University, San Antonio College, San Antonio Library, Southwest Research Institute, Southwest Foundation for Research and Education, Trinity University, and the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio. These charter members carried out the mission of CORAL—to share sources—by creating the first union list of sources. In 1968, San Antonio’s Specialized Library Resources (which is not in this collection) was published by CORAL, which listed the inventory of the member libraries, described each library, and listed their hours of operation. Over the years, CORAL grew from the aforementioned Libraries up to twenty-eight members that extend from Antonio to San Marcos and Seguin. CORAL’s mission today remains the same, to link the local libraries so that the scholarly community has access to a wider range of academic materials. The members consist of academic, military, corporate, and special libraries.

Detailed Description of the Collection



Administrative Documents
	The Administrative Documents consist of CORAL’s annual reports, its by-laws, meeting minutes, and Disaster Plans. In the Administrative Documents, the everyday business of the consortium is seen in the inter-office memorandums, the monthly meeting minutes, and statistical information found in the annual reports. The monthly meeting minutes, spanning from 1966 to 1990, provide information on how and why decisions were made, and what affect they had on CORAL as a whole. Correspondence and meeting agendas are also located in the Administrative Documents series; and in those records, one will see the outlines for meetings and correspondence regarding the everyday affairs of the consortium.

Financial Documents
	The Financial Documents consist of the treasurer’ reports, the auditor’s reports, and Internal Revenue Service papers. In these records CORAL’s financial background can be traced, plus the costs and fees charged for various services like deliveries. Furthermore, expense reports for books, periodicals, and transportation can be found in this section.

Grants
	The Grants section contains grant proposals and grant materials that show that the major source of CORAL’s funding was in the form of federal grants. The documents also indicate how the money was spent. It is in this section that it becomes clear how CORAL’s programs such as the Collection Development Committee (CDC) and the delivery service were funded.

Special Interest Groups
	The Special Interest Groups series consist of groups that were created by CORAL to handle the everyday affairs of a library consortium. For a complete list of interest groups see the folder marked Procedure Manuals in folder, 6, box 1. Examples of those groups are the Area Institutional Delivery Service (AIDS), which was responsible for delivering materials to various libraries; CIRCILL that is the group in charge of interlibrary loans; and CORAL / Periodicals / Serials Interest Group (CORPSE), which was responsible for acquiring and maintaining CORAL’s magazines and journals.
