Sam Woolford was born on April 2, 1897 in Galton, Illinois and spent
his childhood in many cities including San Antonio from 1908 to 1912. Mr.
Woolford returned to San Antonio in 1919. He became a cub reporter beginning a
long career with the
San Antonio Light that same year. After
reporting on the military in San Antonio, Mr. Woolford held several positions
including Sunday Editor from 1928 and 1941 and City Editor from 1941 to 1946.
He retired from the
San Antonio Light in 1950.
While working at the paper, Mr. Woolford hired Bess Carroll as a cub
reporter in 1923. She had written for and edited several small papers including
the
Sommerset News and the
Harlandale Hearld. She became a features
writer for the
San Antonio Light and a correspondent for
several Hearst wire services. She and Sam Woolford were married in 1932.
After leaving the
San Antonio Light in 1936, Bess Carroll
Woolford served as Information Officer in several government agencies. She also
was editor of
Texas: A Guidebook to the Lonestar State,
published by the Works Progress Administration as part of the American Guide
series. In 1942, Mrs. Woolford became the first woman branch manager of the
Office of War Information. She also wrote Allied propaganda to be broadcast to
Nazi occupied countries on the Voice of America.
When Mr. Woolford retired from the
San Antonio Light , he and his wife moved
to Moonshine Valley, a ranch near Boerne, Texas. They continued to write both
on separate projects and collaboratively. Their book,
The San Antonio Story, was published in
1950. Mr. Woolford also wrote a Sunday column for the
San Antonio Light from 1955 to 1975
called
"Woolford's Tales" These columns were
stories on the history and folklore of Texas the Southwest. Some of these
stories were collected and published in
Tales of the Moonshine Valley.
Sam and Bess Woolford were also active supporters of the Witte Museum
in San Antonio. They were both friends of long time Curator Ellen Quillin. Mr.
Woolford served on the Board of Directors and promoted the museum through a
radio variety show in the 1930s. Mrs. Woolford wrote an extensive history of
the Museum,
The Story of the Witte Memorial Museum
1922-1960. The Museum also published the archaeological finds made by
Mr. Woolford during his many exploratory trips to west Texas.
Bess Woolford died on March 20, 1971 in Kerrville, Texas at the age of
69. Sam Woolford died on April 6, 1980 near Boerne, Texas at the age of 83.
Return to the Table of Contents
The papers of Sam and Bess Woolford are divided into nine series
dating from 1834 to 1977. As journalists and writers and as historians of Texas
and the southwest, their papers document Texas history and folklore. The bulk
of the material belonged to Sam Woolford.
Correspondence contains letters to and from Sam Woolford. These
letters are largely from people commenting on his
"Woolford Tales" column. There is also
some personal correspondence from family and friends. Additional personal
material can be found in the Personal series.
"Woolford Tales" contains drafts, typed
copies and clippings of Mr. Woolford's weekly column of the same name.
"Woolford Tales" ran in the
San Antonio Light from 1955 to 1975,
nearly all of the columns are represented here. Access to the
"Woolford Tales" is aided by a subject
index created by Mr. Woolford. Many of the columns concern the natural beauty
and history of certain locations in the Southwest such as a group of columns on
the Big Bend and the Ozarks. Mr. Woolford also wrote biographical columns of
prominent Texas people and families. Some examples are Frank Olsmith, J.C.
Hume, Henry Martyn Trueheard and Camila Hanks. Other items written by Sam
Woolford, including a compilation of selected Woolford Tales, published as
Tales from the Moonshine Valley are in the
Manuscripts series. The series consist of articles and speeches written by Sam
Woolford about Texas history, both published and unpublished. Several of the
manuscripts later served as a basis for a
"Woolford Tales" and a few like
The San Antonio Story, were written with
his wife Bess Woolford.
Material relating to Texas and research into Texas history and
folklore can be found in the Texana series. It consists primarily of collected
documents such as three bound volumes of correspondence from William Armstrong,
a Texas businessman and financier. These documents were used to assist Sam and
Bess Woolford in the writing of
"Woolford's Tales" and other projects.
Also included are extensive notes by Sam Woolford on San Antonio and Texas
History. Bulletins of groups of which Sam or Bess Woolford were members such as
the Southwest Texas Archeological Association and the Daughters of the Republic
of Texas are located in the printed materials series along with many items not
related to Texas.
Some issues of newspapers from Texas and around San Antonio are also
included in the collection. There are several Editions of the
San Antonio Light. Of particular note is
an editorial group of World War I photographs published in serial form by the
paper in 1934. Most of these issues are from papers that Sam or Bess Woolford
worked on but historic issues of other papers are also included.
Material detailing the independent career and writings of Bess Carroll
Woolford is kept in its own series. These papers include drafts of her
published work,
The History of the Witte Memorial Museum.
Material, which Bess Woolford wrote with Sam Woolford, is located in the
Manuscript series.
