Dr. Steven Ungerleider studied psychology at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Oregon. He is a licensed psychologist, practicing in Eugene, Oregon, and an adjunct professor at the University of Oregon. He has served on the United States Olympic Committee Sport Psychology Registry and has consulted with several college, Olympic and professional sports organizations.

The Dr. Steven Ungerleider GDR Collection in Honor of Professor Werner Franke and Brigitte Berendonk contains six linear feet of photocopies of scientific and medical reports, official Stasi files from the Federal Commissioner for Stasi Records (BStU), legal documents from various German courts, as well as articles, correspondence, and manuscript material.
Dr. Steven Ungerleider assembled this documentation of East German doping experiments, doping-related criminal activities and their repercussions during the preparation of his book
Faust's Gold: Inside the East German Doping Machine
.
The first series, Scientific and Medical Reports (1 linear ft.), contains photocopies of reports and published articles on doping experiments. Prominent scientists and physicians, such as Winfried Schäker, Manfred Höppner, conducted studies between 1973 and 1989 in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR). Many of the studies were post-doctoral dissertations. All of the scientific and medical reports deal with the effects of what the East German scientists considered "supportive measures," or unterstutzende Mittel (u.M.), to improve the performance of athletes in various Olympic sports.
The second series, IM (unofficial collaborators) Stasi Reports (3.5 linear ft), documents the infiltration of the scientific, medical and sporting community by the East German secret police, the Stasi. The reports are photocopies from the Federal Commissioner for the Records of the State Security Service of the former German Democratic Republic (BStU), an organization responsible for the preservation and administration of Stasi documents. IM's, which used code names such as "Technik" and "Rolf," acted as spies for the State Security Service (MfS), and gave regular, detailed reports on their activities and the activities of colleagues. Among the IM's in the scientific and medical community were Dr. Ekkert Arbeit (code name "Claus Tisch"), Head Track and Field Coach and sports scientist, and Dr. Lothar Kipke (code name "Rolf"), Chief Physician of the East German National Swimming Association.
The third series, Court and Police Material, documents various sports doping-related trials that took place in Germany between 1997 and 2000. In this series (1.5 linear ft.), photocopies of materials from criminal court cases, in both German and English, recount the trials and verdicts in doping cases at various levels of the German court system, from local courts to the German Federal Court. The cases include: the Regional Court Berlin trial against E. Müller, W. Richter, and J. Tannenberger, who were found guilty of doping the East German women's swimming team; and the case against Rolf Gläser and Dieter Binus, who were charged in 1998 with willful bodily harm for their involvement in East Germany's secret doping program. The cases describe in detail the unfolding of the incriminating activities committed by the accused, and include extensive evidence, often gleaned from Stasi files.
The fourth and final series in the collection, Articles, Correspondence, and Manuscript Fragments (0.5 linear ft.), contains copies of news articles published between 1998 and 2000. The articles primarily consist of new coverage of the ongoing doping trials in Germany, as well as other sports doping-related news from around the world. The bulk of this series contains articles published by various international magazines and newspapers, such as the Sueddeutsche Zeitung and the New York Times. Many of the articles were sent to Dr. Ungerleider by law firms like Rosenfeld, Meyer and Susman L.L.P. The manuscripts include articles and copies of books on sports doping. Among the manuscripts is an English translation of Brigitte Benrenock's book Doping: From Research to Deceit. Translated by Gisela Ulich, the book has never been published in English.
The inventory lists all German-language documents by their titles as translated into English, followed by a brief comment on their content.

The collection's arrangement is based on Dr. Steven Ungerleider's original order, and divided into four series: Scientific and Medical Reports; IM (unofficial collaborators) Stasi Reports; Court and Police Material; and Articles, Correspondence, and Manuscript Fragments.

Subsequent additions to the collection that fall outside of Dr. Ungerleider's classification scheme have been added to the end of the inventory.
