Historical Note

The Blood Bank of UTMB supplies blood and components to the UTMB Hospitals, the Shriners Burns Institute and St. Mary’s Hospital. It collects and processes over 13,000 units of blood per year and transfuses over 25,000 blood components. There is an active aphaeresis program and a frozen red cell program. The Blood Bank also has a rare donor file and is a reference laboratory for area hospitals. The mission of the UTMB Blood Bank is to establish and promote the highest standards of care for patients and donors in all aspects of blood banking and transfusion medicine. Also, to provide safe products, educational programs and innovative, quality services in a professional, timely and cost effective manner to all of our customers.
