Biographical Note

John Robert Calverley (1932-2004) graduated from the University of Oregon (BS, 1953) and Oregon Health Sciences University (MD, 1955). He interned and completed residency at the University of Iowa followed by fellowships in internal medicine and neurology at Mayo Clinic. After three years practicing as a physician for the Air Force, Dr. Calverley joined UTMB as an assistant professor and advanced to professor in seven years. Dr. Calverley founded and chaired the Division of Neurology that later became a department which he also chaired for thirty two years. He received many awards including four Student A.M.A. Golden Apple Awards for Outstanding Teacher (1967, 1970, 1977, and 1980), UTMB Teacher of the Year (1987), John P. McGovern Award in Oslerian Medicine (2004), and the Texas Neurological Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award (2004). Dr. Calverley held many national leadership positions such as: president of the Association of University Professors of Neurology, director of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, chairman of the Residency Review Committee for Neurology, and executive committee member for the American Academy of Neurology. Best Doctors in America and Town & Countries’ Outstanding Medical Specialists included Dr. Calverley in many publications.

Scope and Content

This collection consists of one clamshell box and contains mostly biographical documents such as Dr. Calverley’s curriculum vitae, various awards and honors, and photographs. Also included are several reprints and an issue of Archives in Neurology.
