Biographical Note

Edward I. Bradbridge Thompson, M.D. (1933 - ) served as I.H. Kempner Professor of Human Genetics Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB). He earned his BA from Rice University in 1955 and his MD from Harvard Medical School in 1960. In 1984, Dr. Thompson began his career at UTMB as the Chairman of the Department of Human Biological Chemistry and Genetics (now the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) a position that he held until 2003. He was also instrumental in the creation of the Molecular Biology Center at UTMB. This department performs extensive research in the cellular and molecular actions of steroids, especially glucocorticoids and oxysteroids. Throughout his career, Dr. Thompson published extensively and also served as the founding editor, and the first editor-in-chief, of the journal Molecular Endocrinology. His areas of research included; steroids, oncogenes, gene regulation, and molecular biology of gene expression.


Scope and Content

The Edward I. Bradbridge Thompson, M.D. Papers consist of three records center boxes. The collection is divided into eight series: Biographical Information, Class Notes, Teaching Files, Conferences, Drafts and Manuscripts, Publications, Human Biological Chemistry and Genetics Department Files, and Miscellaneous. Reprints of Dr. Thompson’s published articles are also included.

*One oversize box contains a poster advertising the creation of Molecular Endocrinology, cassette tapes, and several discs: cds, 5” floppy discs, and a zip disc. For preservation reasons, the collection has been re-foldered and re-boxed using acid free materials. Original item order has been preserved whenever possible.
