Biographical Note

George William Nordholtz ("Nordy") Eggers (1896-1963) was born on January 28, 1896 in Galveston to Emil E.F. Eggers and Gertrude Mensman Eggers. Most of his life was spent on the island. He attended Rice Institute because it was free to attend and graduated in 1917. Following his time at Rice he served as a Lieutenant in the Field Artillery in WWI from 1917-1919. When he returned, he enrolled in classes at UTMB. He graduated in 1923 and became an instructor in the Department of Anatomy. On December 31, 1923 he married, native Galvestonian, Edith Sykes. He briefly interned at Charity Hospital in New Orleans from 1924-1925. He returned to UTMB following his internship as an Instructor in the Department of Surgery and became the apprentice of Dr. James Thompson, UTMB’s first Professor of Surgery, and Dr. A.O. Singleton. He became interested in orthopedic surgery and, in 1943, became the first Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and the first Chief of the newly established Division of Orthopedic Surgery at UTMB, a title he held until his death in 1963. Dr. Eggers took a strong interest in crippled children and is largely responsible for the construction of the State Hospital for Crippled and Deformed Children, which opened in 1937.

Dr. Eggers has published over 60 scientific publications and is best known for his contributions in the fields of fracture treatment and cerebral palsy. In 1949 he received the Robert Danis Award for his work in the field of operative treatment of fractures and the slotted plate which he designed, called the Eggers contact splint.

At various times in his career, Dr. Eggers has served as President for several organizations including the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy, the Texas Orthopedic Society, the Texas Surgical Society, the Clinical Orthopedic Society, the Houston Orthopedic Club, the Texas Rheumatism Association, the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, and the American Orthopedic Association.
