Biographical Note

Dr. Harold Young Vanderpool (1936 - ) served as Professor of the History and Philosophy of Medicine, and as James Wade Rockwell Professor in the Institute for the Medical Humanities at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He graduated from Harding College (B.A., Religious Studies and Pre-Med, 1958), Abilene Christian University (M.A., Psychology and Biblical Studies, 1960) and Harvard University (B.D., 1963, Religious Studies; Ph.D., American and Religious Studies, 1971; Th.M., Bioethics and History of Medicine, 1976).

Dr. Vanderpool taught in the School of Medicine and offered graduate courses on the foundations of bioethics, on medicine and religion, and on the ethics and regulations involving human subjects. He lectured extensively across the United States and abroad and published over forty journal articles, book chapters and books on bioethics, the history of medicine, and the roles of religion, science, and medicine in America and Western Europe. Dr. Vanderpool also served as the director or co-director of many short courses on topics in the ethics and oversight of biomedical research and spirituality and clinical care. His research interests focused in four major areas: current issues in the ethics of research with human subjects, historical backgrounds to controversies over euthanasia, ways to implement the human dimensions of cancer care in clinical settings, and the public policy and ethical dimensions of xenograft transplants.

In 2005, Dr. Vanderpool received the Dr. & Mrs. Joseph T. Painter Distinguished Professorship in Teaching Excellence. He has consulted nationally for numerous organizations, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Department of Health and Human Services Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Xenotransplantation (SACX).
