Biographical Note

A native of Wichita Falls, Texas, William B. Ward was a dedicated sports fan and collector of sports memorabilia. He was born in Wichita Falls, Texas on January 27, 1896, where he lived growing up and during most of his adult life. Ward was involved in the sports community of his hometown, and extensively collected sports materials from Wichita Falls, as well as in the state of Texas. He played for both the baseball and football teams while attending Wichita Falls High School. Ward was an avid fan of his hometown high school football team and regularly attended their games as an adult. Locally, he built a reputation for his expansive sports knowledge and personal library of collectable items.

Although Ward had a wide-ranging interest in all types of sports-related events, he had a particularly strong interest in baseball and football and, at times, even tracked game scores and statistics while in attendance at games. His careers were diverse, particularly while living in California. From 1921 to 1924, Ward served as the head baseball coach and assistant athletic director at Hollywood High School in California. He additionally worked with the Hollywood Boy Scouts and organized the Hollywood Boys Club. Holding college degrees in electrical and mechanical engineering, he also worked as an electrician for a major film studio in Hollywood.

When Ward moved back to Wichita Falls, he formed the Wichita Falls Boys Club and Wichita Falls Baseball League. Ward also served as a member of the following fraternal and religious groups: Kiwanis Club, Maskat Temple, Masonic Lodge 635, A.F. and A.M. (Ancient Free and Accepted Masons) and First Presbyterian Church. He spent the remainder of his life living in Wichita Falls, and died on December 21, 1962 after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage. His surviving family members included his wife Ellene Collins and brother Joe E. Ward. His brother was also a serious collector and presumably assisted Ward with building his sports collection. Joe also played a vital role in the preservation of the materials after William’s death.
