Historical Background

Judge Robert Simonton Gould (1826-1904) and Governor Oran Milo Roberts (1815-1898) were the first professors of Law appointed to the University of Texas when it opened in 1883. Gould had previously served as a district attorney and judge for the Thirteenth District, and as associate justice and chief justice (by a one-year term appointment) of the Texas Supreme Court. Roberts had previously served as an associate justice and chief justice of the Texas Supreme Court, and as Governor of Texas from 1878-1883.

Thomas Watt Gregory (1861-1933) earned a University of Texas law degree in 1885 and was among the first graduates of the University. He later served as an assistant attorney for the city of Austin and as University Regent, practiced law in partnership with another UT law graduate Robert Lynn Batts (1864-1935), and in 1914 was appointed attorney general of the United States.
