Guide to the Black's Law Dictionary (8th ed.) Editorial Files at the Tarlton Law Library
The preparation of Black's Law Dictionary (8th ed.) was a continuation of an effort begun in the 7th edition to conduct a complete overhaul of the dictionary. Bryan Garner, Editor-in-Chief at Black's Law Dictionary and a University of Texas School of Law alumnus, led the effort to make the dictionary's definitions more concise, improve the coverage of legal terms, and to make the dictionary better adhere to principles of lexicography. For the 7th edition, Garner and his staff researched and wrote every definition "from scratch." For the 8th edition, Garner sent the definitions to legal experts for further examination and revision. Additionally, he enlisted experts from several different fields in the law, resulting in greater coverage in their areas and greatly amplified appendixes.

The collection consists almost entirely of drafts of sections of Black's Law Dictionary (8th ed.) with revisions marked by members of an academic and practitioner review panel. Each folder contains one edited section and in most cases includes brief correspondence between the reviewer and the editor. For their editing duties, reviewers looked at all terms under one letter in the alphabet, at a selection of terms for a range of letters, or at terms for a specific topic. Sections vary in length, and can be as large as one hundred pages.
The four series in the collection loosely reflect the organization of the dictionary. The first, and largest series, "Edited drafts, A-Z terms," consists of the terms that appear in the dictionary between A-Z. The series "Edited drafts, specialized topics" contains terms pulled from the A-Z sections that relate to specific areas or topics within the law. The series "Edited drafts, appendixes" contains an edited table of legal abbreviations. Finally, the series "Edited drafts, new entries" consists of entries new to the 8th edition. While the collection consists almost entirely of edited drafts, a small amount of correspondence between Garner and members of the review panel is found in the first series in the folder "Suggestions for new entries."
