Scope and Contents Note

The Concrete Poetry Collection includes small press materials, leaflets, brochures and monographs from the 20th century Concrete Poetry movement. The movement – which sought to combine elements of visual art with traditional poetic expression via use of visual patterns and geometric abstraction – gained international recognition and was tied to other genres of art and poetry such as avant-garde, Fluxus, and op art. More specifically, this collection demonstrates the output of the The Centro de Arte y Comunicación (CAYC), a Buenos Aires-based organization lead by Jorge Glusberg whose primary activities included exhibitions, publications, workshops, and lectures. The group, which rose to prominence in the 1970s, played an international role in the dissemination of Concrete Poetry and was also closely tied to the Madi art movement founded in 1946 by Hungarian-Argentine artist Gyula Kosice. Represented in the collection are major concrete poets (and related artists) such as Eugen Gomringer, Moacy Cirne, Gyula Kosice, Dick Higgins, Dennis Oppenheim, and Julio LeParc, to name a few. The materials in this collection are organized alphabetically according to author and/or subject.
