Historical Note

From 1983 to 1999, the Central America Resource Center (CARC) compiled a vast collection news articles and informational resources on the current events in the U.S. and Central America. This effort was started by a group of academics at the University of Texas at Austin in response to the large numbers of political refugees from Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Guatemala. CARC gained a nationally respected reputation for gathering important and timely information. Immigration lawyers nationwide used CARC's resources, which documented human rights violations in Central America, as part of their cases for political asylum petitions. In 1992 CARC changed its name to the Human Rights Documentation Exchange (HRDE) and expanded its mission to collect documentation for asylum cases worldwide.

Scope and Contents Note

The Central America Resource Center Records contains information on the 1990 presidential election in Nicaragua as well as received correspondence from the Asociación Nicaragüense Pro-Derechos Humanos (ANPDH). The first series, Nicaragua Presidential Election, 1990, contains articles, newspaper clippings, poll reports, and other information on the 1990 presidential election in Nicaragua. The materials are mostly in English and are arranged by sugject, in accordance with the folder subject dividers used by the Central America Resource Center.

The second series, Asociación Nicaragüense Pro-Derechos Humanos, contains received correspondence from Asociación Nicaragüense Pro-Derechos Humanos, an organization formerly based in San José, Costa Rica and later moved to Managua, Nicaragua. The correspondence is essentially reports of human rights violations committed by the Sandinistas. In addition to CARC, the ANPDH also sent its reports to the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights. These materials are in Spanish and are arranged in chronological order.
