Biographical Sketch

Charles Frederick Nafus, III, was born in Dallas, Texas on September 21, 1942. Charles "Chale" Nafus grew up in Dallas where he attended public schools and graduated from North Dallas High School in 1960. He attended Southern Methodist University for a year before dropping out and then working for Texas Instruments. In 1963, he enrolled at the University of Texas at Arlington (UT Arlington) and received a BA in English in 1966. Chale Nafus went on to study English and film studies at the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) and received a MA in 1968.

From 1970-1973, he studied Super-8mm filmmaking while living in New York. In 1973, he returned to Austin to take a teaching position with Austin Community College (ACC). While at ACC, Mr. Nafus taught film studies, created video programs on Latino culture in Central Texas and a hip hop series in 1984-1985. He also established the Radio Television Film (RTF) department and for seven years served as Chair of Humanities. In 1999, Nafus retired from ACC after over two decades of teaching.

Nafus' relationship with the Austin Film Society dates back to 1985 when he became a founding board member. As of January 2015, he is the Director of Programming for the Austin Film Society.

Scope and Contents Note

The Charles Nafus Collection includes programs from Espiritu de Aztlan, original recordings of interviews conducted for the Grandchildren of the Revolution five part series, and video recordings of La Feria de las Flores and Floricanto.

Espíritu de Aztlán was a cablecast series of programs focused on Mexican American and Mexican culture in Texas. Mr. Nafus produced and directed the series in Austin from 1976-1981. It was shown on Austin Community College (ACC) Access Cable Channel 10 (then shared by ACC and ACTV) and some programs were later shown on Austin Community Television.

Grandchildren of the Revolution was produced by Kay Sutherland and Juan Vásquez and directed by Chale Nafus. This five part series includes interviews with different Mexican Americans including: Martha P. Cotera, Bambi Cardenas Ramirez, Alfredo G. de los Santos Jr., Gustavo L. Garcia (Gus Garcia), Dr. Hector P. Garcia (videos not included in the collection), Dr. Jose Angel Gutierrez, Jose Maria de Leon Hernandez (Little Joe), Dr. Norma Hernandez, Amado Peña, Estela Portillo Trambley, Father Ricardo Ramirez, and Irma Rangel.

The collection is divided in three series: Espiritu de Aztlan, Other Recordings, and Grandchildren of the Revolution. The recordings are 3/4-inch Umatic, 3/4-inch Umatic S, and 1/2-inch open reel videotapes. "Video" number is listed under "folder."

   Espiritu de Aztlan: Contains a set of the seventy one edited programs for Espiritu de Aztlan as well as original footage that was not edited into a final program. Subjects include: charreadas, music, poetry, dance, photography, genealogy, art, theater, history, sculpture, religion, drama, and short stories (subjects provided by Mr. Nafus). This series is organized by program number.

   Other Recordings: Includes several recordings of La Feria de las Flores at Fiesta Gardens (Austin, Texas) which include appearances of Johnny Degollado and Shorty and the Corvettes. Also included are several videotapes labeled Floricanto, these are probably recordings of the Festival Floricanto II which was held in Austin, Texas on March 12-16, 1975.

   Grandchildren of the Revolution: Includes a recording of a discussion between Kay Sutherland and Juan Vasquez (producers of the series) as well as original footage of the people interviewed for the Grandchildren of the Revolution series.
