Oscar Martinez Papers, 1936-2009
Biographical NoteAwarding winning Texas Tejano musician and visual artist Oscar Martinez was born (January 3, 1934) and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas. He first established himself as a songwriter, trumpet player, and performer in the 1950s and went on record well known tunes such as "La Mala Cara," "El Gallo Copetón," and "El Tejano Enamorado." Martinez colaborated with other Tejano musicians such as Isidro Lopez, Freddie Martinez, and Leo Saenz, and spent much of his career touring to perform all over Texas. He also hosted a radio program on KCCT in Corpus. In 1999 Martinez was inducted into the Tejano Music Awards Hall of Fame.
