Administrative History

In 1991 faculty and staff on the University of Texas at Austin campus met to form the Hispanic Faculty and Staff Association (HFSA). The group ratified its constitution in 1992 and elected Dr. Margarita M. Arellano as its first chair. The HFSA executive board retains a treasurer, recorder, historian, and public relations coordinator, as well as a chair or co-chairs. The association, which emphasizes community service, exists to support and advance Hispanic culture on campus and in the community, as well as the professional and social needs of Hispanic faculty and staff at UT Austin. In addition to its monthly meetings, the HFSA holds an annual leadership symposium, a Holiday Fiesta and Auction, and a food drive called the Holiday Assistance Program. Money raised through the Holiday Fiesta Auction supports the Hispanic Faculty and Staff Association-Jamail/Long Challenge Grant Scholarship, awarded annually to a University of Texas student.

Scope and Contents Note

This collection contains documents from the Hispanic Faculty and Staff Associations’s founding through the first decade of the twenty-first century. The bulk of the collection consists of materials from 2003 through 2009, many of which are financial in nature, and which appear to have been gathered from the organization’s treasurers. The collection is arranged in four series: Association Founding and Early Organization, Administrative Records, Treasurers’ Records, and Events and Programs.

Series one,   Association Founding and Early Organization, consists of correspondence, reports, applications, newsclippings, and promotional material from 1991 to 1996. It records the founding and growth of the HFSA, including events, membership, finances, and leadership.

  Administrative Records, series two, is further divided into the two subseries, General Administrative and Membership Registration. The General Administrative subseries is composed of handouts and packets, mail received, and correspondence related to the activities of the HFSA and its executive board. The Memberhip Registration subseries consists of application forms that document member registration during the academic years 2003-2011.

Series three,   Treasurers’ Records, is broken into four subseries based on the terms of the four treasurers who served from 2003 to 2009, Greg Caldera during the 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 academic years, Sylvia Jean during the 2005-2006 academic year, Graciela (Grace) Pratt during the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 academic years, and Juanita Rodriguez during the 2008-2009 academic year. Some non-financial documents are found with the treasurers' records to retain original order.

Series four,   Events and Programs, is divided into subseries by the organization’s major annual events and programs, the monthly Association Meetings, the Holiday Fiesta and Silent Auction, the Holiday Assistance Program, the Leadership Symposium, and the Annual Scholarship. It contains sign-in sheets, spreadsheets, correspondence, and essays, among other documents.
