Biographical Sketch

The National Latino/a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Organization (LLEGÓ), was a nonprofit organization committed to organizing Latino/a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities through mobilization and networking. LLEGÓ was founded in 1987 during the National March for Lesbian and Gay Rights in Washington, DC, at el Primer Encuentro de Gais y Lesbianas Latinas.

Headquartered in Washington, DC, LLEGÓ published two bilingual quarterly newsletters, Aquí LLEGÓ which provided updates on LLEGÓ activities as well as political and social issues, and AIDSIDA Info, which provided current HIV/AIDS information and its impact on Latino gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people. LLEGÓ also sponsored "Encuentro," an annual conference that presented skill building seminars in the areas of leadership and public policy, the arts and humanities, health issues, resource development and funding. "Encuentro" also provided forums for discussing and examining the impact of HIV/AIDS on the lesbian and gay Latina/o communities, and worked towards a coordinated HIV/AIDS prevention and education strategy for the community.

LLEGÓ provided a number of programs and campaigns for the lesbian and gay Latina/o communities, funded in part by grants from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Minority AIDS Council (NMAC), among others. Avanzando addressed the need to have centrally located and culturally-based capacity-building assistance services for Latino populations. Horizontes worked at building the leadership skills of gay and bisexual men as a means of strengthening and mobilizing community efforts for HIV prevention. CIPCEN was a multi-national cooperative on HIV/AIDS prevention which focused on developing and sustaining linkages for HIV prevention technologies between US Latino-serving organizations and Central American agencies in Honduras and Guatemala. ACCIÓN LLEGÓ was a national advocacy and community mobilization program that developed support for advancing the civil rights and health agendas fo Latino LGBT people and their families through community education and planning, public policy and legislative advocacy, and public education through media advocacy. Futuro Aquí worked to support Latina/o youth leadership and enhance the capacity of Latino community-based organizations to participate and influence the HIV prevention community planning process in regards to the HIV prevention needs of Latina/o youth.

LLEGÓ closed its doors in 2004 due to financial and administrative difficulties.

Scope and Contents Note

Correspondence, printed material, meeting agendas and minutes, reports, financial documentation, photographs, and artifacts detail the functions and activities of the National Latino/a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Organization (LLEGÓ). The records are arranged into eleven series.

Series one,   Public Policy and Government Relations (1992-2004), contains records collected by Laura Esquivel, Director of Public Policy and Government Relations. These records include correspondence, reports, newspaper clippings, and printed material. The original order of the records as received by the University of Texas was maintained; the records were divided into three parts, Issues, Other, and Organizations. Other was renamed Federal Marriage Amendment for clarity, as all of the records in this subseries are related to the FMA. The Issues subseries includes material related to a variety of topics, such as Advancing HIV Prevention, Marcha Lesbica, legislation, domestic violence, Building Bridges, hate crimes, and the Minority AIDS/HIV Initiative. The Organizations subseries includes material related to the Human Rights Campaign, National Coalition for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Health, National Hispanic Leadership Agenda, and the National Council of La Raza.

Series two,   Policy and Public Affairs (1992-2004), includes the records of   Noemí Pérez, Director of Policy and Public Affairs, and of Communications Managers   George Maestre and   Ronald Hube. This series contains correspondence, reports, manuals, research files, and printed material related to the operations of the Policy and Public Affairs Department. This series also contains two subseries which were left in as close to the original order as possible, entitled   Resources and   Archived Communication Files.

Series three,   Training and Community Education (1992-2004), contains the records of Community Mobilization Manager Nicole Manning. This series contains newsletters, policy reports, and brochures related to community outreach programs and publications.

Series four,   Development (1998-2004), includes the records of Directors of Development   Jorge-Mario Cabrera,   Ados Velez-May, and   Pedro Alberta Chavez, as well as the records of Special Events Manager   Tanya Headley and Marketing and Publications Manager   Ben Sheppard. This series contains correspondence, reports, workplans, and printed material.

Series five,   Programs (1988-2004), is the most extensive series of the collection, and includes correspondence, reports, financial documents, program files, grant files, and manuals related to various programs and campaigns. This series is divided into seven sub-series:   Avanzando,   CIPCEN,   Horizontes,   Encuentro,   National Dinner,   TATA, and   Small Grants.

Series six,   LLEGÓ Publications (1989-2003), is a small series containing newsletters and other material published by LLEGÓ.

Series seven,   Outside Publications (1978-2004), contains magazines, brochures, pamphlets, manuals, and other printed material published by outside sources, but collected by LLEGÓ. This series is organized alphabetically by publication title.

Series eight,   Archives (1988-2004), contains press clippings, reports, meeting minutes, booklets, correspondence, manuals, and newsletters. These records were received in boxes labeled "Archives" but were not in any order within the boxes. The records have been alphabetized by subject.

Series nine,   Audiovisual Materials (1989-2003), is divided into eight sub-series:   Photographic Material,   Cassette Tapes,   Compact Disks,   Floppy Disks,   Zip Disks,   Betacam SP,   VHS, and   U-Matic. This series is arranged by format, and then alphabetically by title.

Series ten,   Ephemera (1987-2004), is divided into three sub-series:   Awards and Certificates,   LLEGÓ Merchandise, and   Other.

Series eleven,   Oversized Material (1992-2003), contains large cloth banners, rolled posters, plaques, and glass and acrylic awards.
