<bioghist encodinganalog="545"><head>Biographical Sketch</head>
<p>Ethnomusicologist Gerard Béhague was a specialist in Brazilian and Andean music. He was born in France and grew up in Brazil, where he studied at at the National School of Music of the University of Brazil and the Brazilian Conservatory of Music. He received a master's degree in musicology at the Sorbonne in Paris, and a Ph.D. in musicology from Tulane University in 1966. He taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and at the University of Texas at Austin.

Béhague was the author of numerous works including <title render="italic">Performance Practice: Ethnomusicological Perspectives</title>, <title render="italic">Music In Latin America: An Introduction</title>, and <title render="italic">Heitor Villa-Lobos: The Search for Brazil's Musical Soul</title>. Founded and edited the <title render="italic">Latin American Music Review</title>. He was president of the society for Ethnomusicology from 1979 to 1981. In 1994 he was inducted into the Brazilian Academy of Music, and in 1997 the Brazilian government awarded him the title of Commander of the Order of Rio Branco. Gerard Béhague died on June 13, 2005.</p></bioghist>
