Rio Record Shop Collection, 1949-1982
Historical NoteSan Antonio business that operated from 1949 to 1982, specializing in Mexican and Mexican American music. Founder Hymie Wolf and his staff maintained various indexes and song lists, including lists of local best-selling recordings and the recording histories of popular songs and musicians. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Contents NoteConsists of sound recordings of Texas popular music (mostly in Spanish) and various indexes and lists relating to Mexican, Mexican American, and American popular music. Recording company labels represented in the collection include ARV International, Bego, Falcon, Freddie, Joey, Tex-Mex, and many other companies. The dates of the recordings are mostly from the late 1960s through 1981. The musical styles represented vary from traditional Norteño music to rock and roll. Lists and indexes in the collection include alphabetical listings of recordings by musician or by song title, some record company catalogues, and lists of top-selling records arranged chronologically. Also included are promotional photos of musicians. Consists of three series: 1. Sound recordings, 2. Indexes, and 3. Visual materials. Indexes arranged alphabetically.
