Scope and Contents Note

Correspondence, research materials, manuscripts, interview notes, and political cartoons relating to twentieth-century Brazilian politics. The papers are arranged into six series.

The first series,   Interview Notes and Memoranda (1961-1977, 2 linear feet), includes summaries of oral and written interviews conducted by Dulles between 1961 and 1977 with leading figures in the Communist movement in Brazil and in Brazilian politics. A few interviews are accompanied by letters or clippings. The series also includes a few notes from other sources.

The second series,   Correspondence (1963-1979, 3 linear inches), includes letters related to Dulles' books on Brazilian political history and/or provide further documentation on the events themselves. The series is divided into three subseries, each arranged chronologically: Letters to Dulles (1963-1966), Correspondence with Octavio Brandão (1969-1974), and Correspondence with Cristiano Cordeiro (1971-1974).

The third series,   Documentary Materials (1920-1966, 5 linear inches), includes articles, reports, and documents relating to political conditions in Brazil, primarily in the 1960s and secondarily in the 1930s. Most are copies. This series also includes photographic reproductions of five unidentified caricatures and of three political cartoons published on the cover of Careta.

The bulk of the fourth series,   Documentary Materials in English Translation (1930-1965, 20 linear inches), relates to communism in Brazil during the 1930s and 1940s. The series is divided into eight subseries, each arranged chronologically: Arquivo Nacional Files, Hermínio Sacchetta Collection Files, Partido Comunista do Brasil, Aliança Nacional Libertadora, Frente Nacional Democratica, Handbills, Government Files, and Publications.

The   Literary Manuscripts (1962, 1979, n.d., 5 linear inches), make up the fifth series. This series contains copies of books and book reviews, including Dulles' maunscript The Vargas Story. The series is divided into two subseries, each arranged alphabetically: Works by Dulles and Works by Others.

The sixth and final series is the   Hermínio Sacchetta Papers (bulk 1936-1945, 1 reel--UNLOCATED [10/2007]), includes microfilmed pamphlets, periodicals, typscripts, clippings, handbills, and circulars relating to the Brazilian Communist Party.
